RIBA South West (Bath) - Financial management: how to run a profitable business
2pm - 4:30pm

What are the key considerations that architects should be aware of when looking to run a successful, profitable practice? It goes without saying that exceeding clients’ expectations is a key contributor to a successful practice, but it can often lead to architects working ‘in’ the business as opposed to ‘on’ the business. In uncertain times, it is more important than ever to have an understanding of pipeline, resource management, cash management and the current market. This session will provide delegates with a clear understanding of the tools available to ensure that practices are run effectively, and crucially, operate at a profit. Using working examples and real-life scenarios, the following topics will be covered:

Business planning

The importance of forecasting and its practical use

Effective record keeping

Cash flow; managing cash flow and useful tips on how to improve it

Raising finance; Where to access it and how to raise it

Reducing your business’ tax liability; what tax reliefs are available, and ways of claiming

A portion of this session will be dedicated to discussing live, working examples of challenges faced by you within your own practice, in order to make the session as useful and relevant as possible.
You will leave equipped with financial management tips and techniques that can be readily applied, and will discover new ways to contribute to the success and profitability of your practice.

The Seduction of Curves: Lecture by Allan McRobie
4:30pm - 5:30pm

The Seduction of Curves: The Lines of Beauty That Connect Mathematics, Art and The Nude by Allan McRobie (Reader in Engineering, University of Cambridge).
There is a deep connection between the stability of building columns and the act of life drawing.  To understand each, we must understand curved surfaces, even when the building columns are straight.  We are all familiar with the language of straight-line geometry - of squares, rectangles, hexagons - but curves also have a language - of folds, cusps and swallowtails - that few of us know.
Allan will explain how the key to understanding the language of curves is René Thom's Catastrophe Theory, and how - remarkably - the best place to learn that language is perhaps in the life drawing class.  Sharing it's title with Allan's new book, the talk will wander gently across engineering and architecture, into wider areas of physics, biology and even art, but always with a focus on curves.

GDPR and data protection

Our chair for the evening discussion will be William Heath who some of you will remember from our opening event earlier in the year. William is involved in a number of initiatives including MyDex and Open Rights Group committed to getting the best out of open data, and empowering individuals to have control over their personal data.

We will be hearing from Graeme Fearon, partner in Intellectual Property from the legal advisory firm Thrings. Don’t forget to first download their No Nonsense Guide to GDPR.

Karen Watson from Wood for Trees will look at practical and pragmatic set of steps a charity can take to prepare for GDPR as well as answer questions on Legitimate Interests v Consent – the big debate for all charities!

Tim Killeen from Complete IT will be joining us, sharing some case studies around how they have helped their clients to overcome the obstacles surrounding data protection and how you can best help to educate your teams around the GDPR. Complete IT partner with many not for profit organisations supporting them with their IT, educating their teams on the ever growing threats around cyber-crime and introducing them to the often free solutions available to charities to help work smarter and safer.

Sunny Seregen, Information Officer and GDPR expert at St Johns Foundation will sum up with their journey to GDPR compliance.

Bathonice with BUMS
7:15pm - 8:15pm

BUMS are visiting Bath on ice, an open air ice rink that appears each year in Victoria Park, Bath. This will be a lovely little trip to get you even more into a Christmassy mood ready for the holidays (and a distraction from all the coursework and the inevitable mountain of revision that's to come).

Afterwards we'll head over for some cocktails (or mulled wine if anyone can suggest where we'd have the privilege to buy such a thing).
Venez prendre un verre ou une tasse

Pencil To Paint
27th September - 13th December

“I think that painting today is pure intuition and luck.”
Francis Bacon on Matthew Smith (1909-1992)
For most of us, our relationship with art begins with a line. We take a pencil or a crayon and delineate our idea. In our enthusiasm, we may even attempt to colour it in. In the experience of many, that attempt leads only to disappointment. We know that a painting is more than just a coloured-in drawing, but how do we do it? What exactly is the difference?
This ten week course explores the gulf between drawing and painting and then seeks to provide a bridge between the two disciplines. Beginning with simple pencil studies, we will then develop our work in both charcoal and ink, gaining confidence in our abilities, before embarking on five weeks of painting in bold colour.
This course is open to all-comers and is ideal for beginners or those who wish to take their art in a new direction.
Topics will include:
Line, measurement and proportion
Tonal value
Colour: theory and mixing
Tables and chairs and a roll of newsprint paper are provided. Please bring a drawing board, paper or pad and your preferred drawing media. Materials required for sessions using colour will be discussed nearer the time.
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available for a small donation.
16:30 to 18:00
Wednesdays  27 September; 04, 18 October; 01, 08, 15, 22, 29 November; 06, 13 December 2017
Membership - Bath Business Partnership
12th February - 2nd January

This is not a one off event. Membership is £600 per year and can be payable annually. This includes 4 dinners per year with guest speakers from the political and business world at each dinner.  There will also be an opportunity for each dinner to be sponsored.
Bath needs small and medium size companies to prosper; they are the backbone of our economy. Bath Business Partnership has been established to promote the interests of businesses within Bath.
We believe it is vitally important that our politicians understand the wide range of issues confronting businesses. I hope you will become a member of the Bath Business Partnership and through meetings with the people that influence our business community from both the political and business world that you will take the opportunity to acquaint them with your company’s positions.
You will have an opportunity to express your views on the way government treats small to medium businesses, what restricts their growth and how the future wealth generators of the country are affected by legislation.
The Bath Business Partnership will also provide an exclusive forum for companies to promote their products and services and to network with other business people to share expertise and knowledge.
We will be seeking to appoint founding patrons to the club that are successful local business people as well as local members.
For more information, please contact Léonie Spencer directly at bathbusinesspartnership@gmail.com

There are 4 high quality dinners per year in Bath. These will be held at prestigious locations. Club membership includes all food and drink with no extra charge, and the menus and bar are of a high standard commensurate with members inviting their clients, family or personal guests. There is no fundraising of any nature at the dinners.
We have agreements from a number of high profile speakers from the political and business world to attend future dinners. These include:
11th May Dinner - Chris Skidmore - Member of Parliament (MP) for Kingswood, South Gloucestershire and Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Chancellor of the Exchequer. He is a regular guest on BBC political programmes, such as The Daily Politics, and sits on the Commons Select Committee on Education.
September 2017 - To be announced
December 2017 - To be announced
It would be helpful to know who our members would find it useful to hear from so we can take this into account when planning  future speakers.
There is always plenty of time to ask questions and have discussions with our attending guests and politicians. There will be opportunities to sponsor dinners and become a patron.
All proceeds after the costs of the events etc. go to Bath Conservative Association. We really believe that the Conservative Party is the Party for Business, and are very proud of this.
