Global Chair Guest Lecture 'Security in the Third World: The Case of North Korea' by distinguished Professor and Global Chair, Prof Chung in Moon
11:15am - 1:05pm

Global Chair Guest Lecture 'Security in the Third World: The Case of North Korea' by distinguished Professor and Global Chair, Prof Chung in Moon
Professor Chung-in Moon is a University of Bath Global Chair. Funded by the International Relations Office, the Global Chair scheme has been designed to attract distinguished, globally renowned scholars to engage in a programme of high-profile research activity at the University of Bath for a fixed period of time.
Already at the end of the 1980s, Professor Moon developed, together with Edward Azar, some ground-breaking ideas on the special characteristics of security in developing countries. Instead of focusing on external threats and military hardware, this theory focused on political software of security – unity, legitimacy and policy capacity – as the main elements of security in a third world context.
Today, 98% of conflict fatalities are produced in fragile developing countries like North Korea and the problems of unity, legitimacy and policy performance have revealed their centrality as today’s security quagmire. While North Korea has been in the media as a simplified case of a rouge state, this lecture will go deeper into the security dynamics of the country and offers completely new understandings of the reasons why North Korea behaves as it does.
This morning lecture will take place at the Univesrity of Bath, 3 East 2.1 from 11.15-13.05, Friday 9th February 2018.
Registration required via this Eventbrite.

Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner
7:30pm - 10:30pm

Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner is a 2001 Canadian epic film directed by Inuit filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk and produced by his company Isuma Igloolik Productions. It was the first feature film ever to be written, directed and acted entirely in the Inuktitut language.
Set in the ancient past, the film retells an Inuit legend passed down through centuries of oral tradition. It revolves around the title character, whose marriage with his two wives earns him the animosity of the son of the band leader, who kills Atanarjuat's brother and forces Atanarjuat to flee by foot.
The film premiered at the 54th Cannes Film Festival in May 2001, and was released in Canada on 12 April 2002. A major critical success, Atanarjuat won the Caméra d'Or (Golden Camera) at Cannes, and six Genie Awards, including Best Motion Picture. Atanarjuat was also a commercial success, becoming Canada's top-grossing release of 2002, outperforming the mainstream comedy Men with Brooms. It grossed more than US$5 million worldwide. In 2015, a poll of filmmakers and critics in the Toronto International Film Festival named it the greatest Canadian film of all time.
