Your Trainer
Adrian McDonagh founded EasyWeb Recruitment in 2005. He oversees the training and technology teams at EasyWeb. His formal job title is “Chief Ideas Officer” which probably says more about his personality than what his job entails. The best explanation we could get from him was “Part-time trainer, part-time product manager, part-time business owner, full time online recruitment ninja” – make of that what you will.

GO Get Networking!
9:30am - 10:45am

Small businesses - this one is for you. We are back!
Networking is vital to the growth of any business, but sometimes there are barriers - particularly for smaller businesses - such as lack of time and budget. We understand this and so we’ve launched GO Get Networking, a new initiative aimed at smaller businesses in and around Bath.
What makes GO Get Networking different to other networking groups?
Over the last few years, our own experience has been that networking groups can be expensive and time-consuming, often involving costly membership fees and too many meet-ups. We wanted to find a simpler and less formal way of networking, and so we decided to design our own.
GO Get Networking is different to other groups because:

It’s specifically intended for smaller businesses only.
THIS IS A FREE EVENT - Simply buy a coffee at the bar on the way in!
Events will be held 4 times a year, allowing you to keep meeting new people.
We meet at 9.30am and finish at 10.45am, giving us enough time to do some useful networking without eating too much into working hours.

Typically, the format is an hour of mingling followed by a 10-minute informal talk given by a group member, or a guest speaker, on a subject that is of interest to others (eg a useful service or helpful app to support your business). This is most definitely not about hard selling but communicating useful information.
If you fancy a coffee and a chance to meet other small businesses that are local to you, please sign up now - we look forward to meeting you.

Social Media: Is It Good Or Bad For Our Society And Our Mental Health?
Bath Philosophy & Debate Group
7:30pm - 9:30pm

• What we'll do

Please watch this TED talk (13:50 Minutes):
Is social media a constant but pointless distraction?
Do we now confuse truth with popularity? Interesting (and short) interview with ex-Facebook executive:
Are we now detrimentally obsessed with popularity? Is this shown through the many competitive programmes on TV which are designed to test the popularity of contestants? What about the mental health of a contestant who fails? Does social media hone our social skills, or has it made society more superficial?
Social influencers are having a big impact on how the world works (one of them was even elected president of the US!). So we can’t ignore them - it’s a new normal?
The Bath based social influencer Elle Darby has recently received criticism for asking for freebies in return for reviews. Recently an entirely fictitious London restaurant was created and went to #1 on the Tripadvisor rankings: (https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2017/dec/17/the-shed-tripadvisors-best-london-restaurant-you-literally-couldnt-get-a-table). Would you agree that web reviews create a false view of the world online, and is this any different from traditional advertising on TV or in print?
Does internet social networking add to or subtract from the availability of truth? Traditionally, our news sources were vetted, but largely by those with an economic or social interest in keeping the established status quo. Now almost anyone can set up a news feed of truth - or fake news - depending on your viewpoint. This tends to lead to polarisation of opinion, but can it also make news more democratic? Has it enabled democratic revolution for the good in certain countries?

On the night please:
-Sit in a circle and speak to the whole circle; one conversation at a time
-Aim for equal airtime; points should be:
*Clearly-structured and
-Arrive early to order drinks
The host moderates but peer-moderation is encouraged

Bath And District- Anything-goes Social Society

• What we'll do
An interesting special needs film not being widely screened
Tickets £12 in advance

Hi Everybody

Paul has very kindly helped me to set this up. I want to get the film shown in Bath via Ourscreen so am trying to get the word out to as many people as possible. I have a daughter with special needs so it's obviously a subject close to my heart.

I'm already part of another group of parents going on the night so won't really be able to properly 'meet-up'. But will be delighted if any of you are interested and can get together. Hopefully I'll be able to come and say hi.

Please note: unless there are enough tickets sold by 11th Feb the film won't be screened, so do book early if you want to see it!

I hope this is all ok. Please message me below if I've forgotten anything or there's something I need to know. Haven't done this before!

• What to bring

Please book by 11th Feb if you can to help ensure the screening goes ahead. It will still be possible to book after this though.

Long Running Events:

Pencil To Paint: Feb - Mar 2018
21st February - 28th March

“I think that painting today is pure intuition and luck.”
Francis Bacon on Matthew Smith (1909-1992)
For most of us, our relationship with art begins with a line. We take a pencil or a crayon and delineate our idea. In our enthusiasm, we may even attempt to colour it in. In the experience of many, that attempt leads only to disappointment. We know that a painting is more than just a coloured-in drawing, but how do we do it? What exactly is the difference?
This course explores the gulf between drawing and painting and then seeks to provide a bridge between the two disciplines. Beginning with simple pencil studies, we will then develop our work in both charcoal and ink, gaining confidence in our abilities, before embarking on five weeks of painting in bold colour.
This course is open to all-comers and is ideal for beginners or those who wish to take their art in a new direction.
Topics will include:
Line, measurement and proportion
Tonal value
Colour: theory and mixing
Tables and chairs and a roll of newsprint paper are provided. Please bring a drawing board, paper or pad and your preferred drawing media. Materials required for sessions using colour will be discussed nearer the time.
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available for a small donation.

Exploring What Matters is a secular, science-based course for people who want to learn how to live happily and spread happiness to those around them.
It was created by the Action for Happiness charity to help people tune in to what really matters in life, connect with people around them and find small ways to start taking action.
On the course you will:

Meet with like-minded people to explore what really matters in life and find new ways of looking at things.

Enjoy expert videos, mindfulness exercises and a handbook full of resources to help you break big ideas into manageable chunks.

Take time each week to think of small actions you can take to create happiness for yourself and those around you.

People find it really valuable and often refer to what they learn on the course as life-changing.
-- Click here to see the impact of the course and what people say about it --
Each week is based around a big question:
Week 1: What really matters in life? We'll explore whether a greater focus on happiness and wellbeing might be better for all of us.
Week 2: What actually makes us happy? We'll explore the role of outer circumstances and inner attitudes in our wellbeing.
Week 3: Can we find peace of mind? We'll explore some of the skills and practices that can help us in difficult times.
Week 4: How should we treat others? We'll explore how to treat others and how we can become more compassionate.
Week 5: What makes for great relationships? We'll explore how our relationship to others impacts our own happiness.
Week 6: Can we be happier at work? We'll explore what makes us happy at work and what can we do about it.
Week 7: Can we build happier communities? We'll explore how to create communities that are more caring, connected and happy.
Week 8: How can we create a happier world? We'll explore how to live in a way that contributes to a happier world, not just for ourselves but for others too.
-- Click here for a sample of Week 1 to give you an idea of what it’s like --
This course is for anyone interested in exploring how to create happiness for themselves or others.
Maybe you’re someone who could do with some new approaches to try out in your own life.
Or maybe you’re passionate about creating happier communities and a happier world.
Either way, by coming together with others locally on this course you can find the inspiration and support you need find the actions that work for you.
Please note: this course is not group therapy, if you are experiencing severe challenges at the moment we recommend seeking alternative professional support.

The course is run by keen volunteers who are stepping forward to help spread happiness in the local area.
Everyone who joins the course makes a donation of their choice to be there.
It costs Action for Happiness about £90 per person to support each course so we ask all participants to give whatever they can to support themselves and others.
You can give as Supporter (£120) or give the Standard (£90) if you are able, otherwise please give whatever donation works for you - even if you can only give £5 right now you’re as welcome as anyone else :)

What are the highlights of the course?
“Sharing and learning from each other allowed us space to grow and taking away action plans each week focused our minds on pro active action.” ~ Jacqueline, London
“More or less everything is a highlight as it is mightily well researched and factual.” ~ Annick, Lindfield
“Being able to believe that I could be brave enough to change my circumstances/life, in order to be happier/make others happier around me.” ~ Michelle, Farnborough
