Data is meaningless without metadata. Metadata is the descriptive information that describes the origin, format, structure and meaning of data. Today's analytics practices typically extract data from various systems without any controls or metadata, and so the data scientist spends most of their time trying to work out what the data means. This is not only inefficient but extremely error prone. If we are to get value from the systematic use of analytics, we need to fundamentally rethink the way that data is managed, both within an organisation and across the data economy. In this talk, Mandy Chessell will cover a ground breaking project that is seeking to change the data industry by providing open and ubiquitous metadata management and governance across all data platforms and tools. This includes the technology under development, the initiatives to build the ecosystem as well as how you can get involved.

Mandy Chessell CBE FREng CEng FBCS is an IBM Distinguished Engineer, Master Inventor and Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. Mandy is a trusted advisor to executives from large organisations, working with them to develop their strategy and architecture relating to the governance, integration and management of information. She is also driving IBM's strategic move to open metadata and governance through the Apache Atlas open source project.   
Mandy was identified in 2000 as one of MIT Technology Review's hundred young people most likely to make significant 21st Century technical innovation. She is also distinguished as the first woman to win a Royal Academy of Engineering Silver Medal.  Her early work focused on transaction processing, event management, business process management, information management and model-driven development.  The breadth of her work is reflected in her invention portfolio, which to date stands at over 50 issued patents worldwide.   More information about Mandy’s work and publications can be found on LinkedIn and her blog.

Are two heads better than one?

Abstract: Can groups of people really make better decisions than the best member of the group on their own? We will discuss research that suggests this is the case, under certain conditions. But what do we expect in the case of adults with autism? We hope to stimulate research on this topic by presenting a paradigm that has been tried and tested: two people have to detect a stimulus and have to come to a joined decision about when and where it occurred. This is compared with a situation where each individual makes their own decision. In previous experiments the secret of better joint decisions was found in the spontaneous alignment of confidence of the two partners. It would be interesting to find out whether autistic individuals also align their confidence. If so, this would throw light on their still little understood ability to imitate and to experience contagious empathy. We will discuss limitations of group decisions, including inappropriate alignment, and common biases that are hard to overcome.

• What we'll do
I will give a brief introduction to Kundalini Yoga and then guide the group through a warm- up, a set of physical postures (called a kriya), a long relaxation and a meditation. There is a breakout area available for socialising afterwards and I will be around to answer any questions you may have.

• What to bring
Please bring a yoga mat if you have one, but don’t worrry- there will be spares. Also bring a light blanket and / or extra layers to keep you cosy during the long relaxation. There is a £5 contribution requested for this class.

• Important to know
Kundalini Yoga is a very fun and uplifting practise which supports you to relax, to improve your fitness and to connect more deeply with yourself. Absolute beginners are most welcome to this group.

It's quite hard hitting from the onset, I'm personally staggering it with one of my favourite Pratchetts to lighten my mood!

I know these meetups are usually on Thursdays, but as Feb is such a short month, i thought we could do the last Wednesday- gives everyone a little more time to start the book and make plans etc.
As always, never any pressure to read/ finish the book and these meetups are entirely open to everyone- new members are most welcome!

The story is simply a progression through the lives of the titular couple, from their courtship in the late 1920s to their deaths in 1971. Ethel is a lady's maid with middle-class aspirations and firm notions of respectable English behaviour; she becomes a housewife when she marries. Ernest, five years younger, is an easygoing milkman with socialist ideals and an enthusiastic interest in modern progress and technology. They live with their only child, Raymond, in a London suburb, through the Great Depression, World War II, the advent of television and other events. The story richly illustrates London working-class life and concerns, during some of the most momentous social and political developments of the 20th century.The book was turned into the feature-length hand-drawn animated film Ethel & Ernest, voiced by Brenda Blethyn, Jim Broadbent and others.

Dreadnought South West have commissioned the design and build of a very special mobile exhibition space. Known as the Listening Booth, it is deliberately designed to look like a voting booth to remind users of the centenary of the right to vote for some women. Excerpts from the oral histories collected for the Rebellious Sounds Archive have been loaded on to interactive voting cards. Listeners put on a pair of headphones and choose a voting card to place in the slot; this will play their chosen story of women's activism.
Head along to a venue near you (host locations will be listed here as they are confirmed).

For most of us, our relationship with art begins with a line. We take a pencil or a crayon and delineate our idea. In our enthusiasm, we may even attempt to colour it in. In the experience of many, that attempt leads only to disappointment. We know that a painting is more than just a coloured-in drawing, but how do we do it? What exactly is the difference?
This course explores the gulf between drawing and painting and then seeks to provide a bridge between the two disciplines. Beginning with simple pencil studies, we will then develop our work in both charcoal and ink, gaining confidence in our abilities, before embarking on five weeks of painting in bold colour.
This course is open to all-comers and is ideal for beginners or those who wish to take their art in a new direction. 
Topics will include:
Mark-making
Line, measurement and proportion
Perspective
Tonal value
Notān
Colour: theory and mixing
Tables and chairs and a roll of newsprint paper are provided. Please bring a drawing board, paper or pad and your preferred drawing media. Materials required for sessions using colour will be discussed nearer the time.
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available for a small donation.

This is of course optional but will be give each enrolled further insight to personal development.

An 8-week course that gives you the chance to meet friendly, like-minded people and find simple ways to make yourself and others happy.

ABOUT THE COURSE
Exploring What Matters is a secular, science-based course for people who want to learn how to live happily and spread happiness to those around them.
It was created by the Action for Happiness charity to help people tune in to what really matters in life, connect with people around them and find small ways to start taking action.
On the course you will:


Meet with like-minded people to explore what really matters in life and find new ways of looking at things.


Enjoy expert videos, mindfulness exercises and a handbook full of resources to help you break big ideas into manageable chunks.


Take time each week to think of small actions you can take to create happiness for yourself and those around you.


People find it really valuable and often refer to what they learn on the course as life-changing.

Each week is based around a big question:
Week 1: What really matters in life? We'll explore whether a greater focus on happiness and wellbeing might be better for all of us.
Week 2: What actually makes us happy? We'll explore the role of outer circumstances and inner attitudes in our wellbeing.
Week 3: Can we find peace of mind? We'll explore some of the skills and practices that can help us in difficult times.
Week 4: How should we treat others? We'll explore how to treat others and how we can become more compassionate.
Week 5: What makes for great relationships? We'll explore how our relationship to others impacts our own happiness.
Week 6: Can we be happier at work? We'll explore what makes us happy at work and what can we do about it.
Week 7: Can we build happier communities? We'll explore how to create communities that are more caring, connected and happy.
Week 8: How can we create a happier world? We'll explore how to live in a way that contributes to a happier world, not just for ourselves but for others too.

WHO THE COURSE IS FOR
This course is for anyone interested in exploring how to create happiness for themselves or others.
Maybe you’re someone who could do with some new approaches to try out in your own life.
Or maybe you’re passionate about creating happier communities and a happier world.
Either way, by coming together with others locally on this course you can find the inspiration and support you need find the actions that work for you.
Please note: this course is not group therapy, if you are experiencing severe challenges at the moment we recommend seeking alternative professional support.

HOW IT WORKS
The course is run by keen volunteers who are stepping forward to help spread happiness in the local area.
Everyone who joins the course makes a donation of their choice to be there.
It costs Action for Happiness about £90 per person to support each course so we ask all participants to give whatever they can to support themselves and others.
You can give as Supporter (£120) or give the Standard (£90) if you are able, otherwise please give whatever donation works for you - even if you can only give £5 right now you’re as welcome as anyone else :)
