Bringing in the Bystander Training - For Student Services
Eventbrite.co.uk
2:15pm - 4:15pm

The University of Bath, in partnership with the SU, are launching a 2 hour training programme to tackle sexual harassment and misconduct on and off campus. We have seen through the #NeverOK campaign, and the Universities UK taskforce report how prevalent sexual harassment is on University campuses. The #MeToo and #Time’sUp movements have shown us that this is not an issue occurring solely at Universities - it is pervasive in society.
This engaging, thought-provoking training course is significant part of The University of Bath's strategy to prevent sexual harassment.
We have all been in situations where we have witnessed something that made us feel uncomfortable....but we weren't quite sure what to do about it, or we thought about a great come-back on the way home! The Bringing In The Bystander programme® gives people to tools to become effective and safe bystanders, whether that is in the moment, or having a quiet word at a more opportune time.
The programme was developed by the University of New Hampshire and has been delivered at Universities across the world, with significant research demonstrating its effectiveness at encouraging attitude change and increasing bystander behaviours.
***Please be aware that course looks at case studies of sexual violence, and may be triggering or upsetting***
A Universal Basic Income - with Natalie Bennett
Eventbrite.co.uk
7pm - 9:30pm

Come and hear the previous leader of the Green Party and long time Basic Income advocate, Natalie Bennett, describe how a Universal Basic Income would work, what it would mean for you and your family, and for society in general.
The meeting is open to all and questions are welcome. Doors open 7pm for a 7:30 start.
The future of work is an issue that no one seems to want to address. With precarious employment and widespread underemployment becoming the norm, the rapid expansion of the gig economy and automation threatening to put millions out of work in the coming years, it is astonishing that the future welfare of working people isn’t dominating political discussion.

It seems unlikely that the automation trend will change. Half of UK companies believe artificial intelligence will soon fundamentally change their industries. But like several other of the biggest issues which threaten our future wellbeing – most notably climate change – it’s one that most political parties have decided to duck.
The Green party is starting conversations about what needs to happen for the next 30 years.
As things stand, the answer to questions about the fate of working people is sadly easy to predict. We live in a society that punishes the unemployed. Our welfare state, based upon assumptions about life that belong to a bygone era, is increasingly unfit for purpose.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.
We live in the fifth largest economy in the world. It is possible to not just weather the gathering storm, but create a new social security settlement for the 21st century.
We believe this can be achieved through a universal basic income – a policy we committed to piloting in our 2017 manifesto. Universal because it would be available to all. Basic because it would provide the essential financial support we all need in the form of a regular payment. Clawed back through progressive taxation, it would be simple and transparent to administer, and provide not just basic security, but options and choices in an increasingly complex world – whether that be to study, start a new venture, care for somebody or supplement employment.
The objections to a basic income invariably focus on affordability. Costings of different schemes have been done by Compass, and the Citizen’s Income Trust. Existing benefits – excluding some such as housing and disability-related benefits, which could be used to top up a basic income – could be amalgamated with existing income tax breaks to create a basic payment. But it could also be supplemented and set at a higher level, depending on how progressive we want our tax system to be.
The universality of the basic income also means it is more efficient to administer than the current welfare system, providing savings. If you suddenly lose your job or finish a contract and can’t find another, there are no forms to fill in, appointments to make, no hours and hours of civil servants’ time used up. Your basic income would still be there, as it always has been. That’s what a strong and stable safety net should look like.
A universal basic income would make lives less stressful and more secure. But it also has the potential to free the talents and potential of all of us, in a world of increasing opportunity and change. With a basic income to fall back on, ambitions to pursue a career that is fulfilling, rewarding and enjoyable can be realised.
But despite the increasing interest in the idea in countries and provinces across the world, from Finland to Ontario, where schemes are already being piloted, here in Britain we are being left behind. We are not even at the stage of exploring its merits and potential.
It is of course something that cannot be introduced overnight, as Iain Duncan Smith showed all too clearly when he fell years behind his own schedule when trying to amalgamate just six benefits to create universal credit. But unlike universal credit, universal basic income would eliminate the poverty trap. And as pilots have shown, it could incentivise, rather than disincentivise, work.
The idea is there. And it is one whose time has surely come. It just requires the political will to make it happen.

Entry is free. A collection will be taken to help to pay for the cost of hiring the venue.
Bath social bar night
The Bath & Bristol Everything Meetup Group
7:30pm - 11pm

I've had quite a few requests to put another Bath social bar night on in this great venue and as I love this place personally, it's an easy request for me to fulfil! Opium Bar has a great laid back atmosphere, seating in various alcoves and more space than you'd initially think after just entering the place. It even has a glass floor covered deep well! Low level lighting, piped music, some seats you could almost lie flat on, the feeling of being in a basement jazz club and the theme is definitely one you'd probably experience in a lot of Boston bars. Great cocktails and some very strange looking drinks available to try, you'll have plenty of choice at the bar. But hey, we're not just here for the drinks....we need to fill the joint with happy Meetupers out for a Friday night social! So, I'm not apologising to Tiddles when I say once again, put out the cat, get the ol' glad rags on and come and join us for some great conversation and fun in this lovely venue! Surely this is what Friday nights in Bath were made for?

Pencil To Paint: Feb - Mar 2018
Eventbrite.co.uk
21st February - 28th March

“I think that painting today is pure intuition and luck.”
Francis Bacon on Matthew Smith (1909-1992)
For most of us, our relationship with art begins with a line. We take a pencil or a crayon and delineate our idea. In our enthusiasm, we may even attempt to colour it in. In the experience of many, that attempt leads only to disappointment. We know that a painting is more than just a coloured-in drawing, but how do we do it? What exactly is the difference?
This course explores the gulf between drawing and painting and then seeks to provide a bridge between the two disciplines. Beginning with simple pencil studies, we will then develop our work in both charcoal and ink, gaining confidence in our abilities, before embarking on five weeks of painting in bold colour.
This course is open to all-comers and is ideal for beginners or those who wish to take their art in a new direction.
Topics will include:
Mark-making
Line, measurement and proportion
Perspective
Tonal value
Notān
Colour: theory and mixing
Tables and chairs and a roll of newsprint paper are provided. Please bring a drawing board, paper or pad and your preferred drawing media. Materials required for sessions using colour will be discussed nearer the time.
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available for a small donation.

ABOUT THE COURSE
Exploring What Matters is a secular, science-based course for people who want to learn how to live happily and spread happiness to those around them.
It was created by the Action for Happiness charity to help people tune in to what really matters in life, connect with people around them and find small ways to start taking action.
On the course you will:

Meet with like-minded people to explore what really matters in life and find new ways of looking at things.

Enjoy expert videos, mindfulness exercises and a handbook full of resources to help you break big ideas into manageable chunks.

Take time each week to think of small actions you can take to create happiness for yourself and those around you.

People find it really valuable and often refer to what they learn on the course as life-changing.

Week 2: What actually makes us happy? We'll explore the role of outer circumstances and inner attitudes in our wellbeing.
Week 3: Can we find peace of mind? We'll explore some of the skills and practices that can help us in difficult times.
Week 4: How should we treat others? We'll explore how to treat others and how we can become more compassionate.
Week 5: What makes for great relationships? We'll explore how our relationship to others impacts our own happiness.
