Future Skills - Creative Roundtable
Eventbrite.co.uk
7:30am - 9:30am

Developing a skilled future workforce is important for the creative and digital sector. This begins during education and it’s now more important than ever that we prepare young people for the realities of what the creative and digital sector really needs in a new or junior employee.
Working together with Bath College and Creative Bath, we’d like to invite you to join us at a breakfast meeting on Tuesday April 17, to share your insights as a leading industry expert in this field.
The aims of this breakfast will be to discover:

What skills an intern, placement student or new employee need to have in order for them to benefit your business?
What does being work-ready mean to your business? Work-readiness might mean hard skills (like coding) or core skills (being motivated/great on the phone)
What do education facilities need to be teaching in order to develop competent, work-ready students?
What would be your reservations about taking on a student for a work experience placement?

Tell us what you need, and we’ll aim to combat any concerns or reservations by working with students – through workshops, longer term projects and potentially even a work-readiness module to better prepare them for life after education.
We’ll also be feeding back on the Skills West survey which looked into these issues and discuss how the findings can help inform next steps.
Help us shape the future of skills of the region!
Please note: This event is for West of England (Bristol, Bath & North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire & North Somerset) organisations only. Places are limited. We may only be able to offer one place per organisation/training provider.

How Engaged Is Your Team ?
Eventbrite.co.uk
9:30am - 12:30pm

Here are some UK stats that might explain why your Company isn't performing anywhere near its potential:-

14% of the workforce are highly engaged - that's to say that they do more than expected

66% of the workforce are disengaged - that's to say they do what is expected

20% of the workforce is highly disengaged - that's to say that they do less than expected.

Where do you think your Company fits?
Often as a Company grows, the direct line of sight to the original mission and culture has become foggy or even lost. With a lack of clear direction along with a set of guiding core values, most larger Companies become havens to those with a mentality of "ME" rather than "WE".
As new people come into the organisation they often follow the majority and if that's a majority of "ME"s then that's where they stay.
As business leaders its critical to re-engage the team to give them back their purpose and make some discoveries on the way. With a re-energised and re-engaged workforce, the Company will be a high performing fun place to work which will attract the people and the customers that you want.
It's never too late to challenge the culture that exists and start creating a new one if the old one isn't serving you or your Company well.
Please note:  This session is complimentary and whilst, at the end, you will be introduced to our services, it is a workshop designed to add value to every business attending.
So That’s Not Enough to Get You There…  Well there is more….
Each business attending will receive a copy of ‘The Minds of Winning Teams’; a employee engagement survey for your business and a complementary survey results session.
Assuming you are ready to learn how to get more from your people, please email to office@actioncoachsouthwest.co.uk or call 01373 80134.
Due to space at the venue places are limited so to avoid disappointment please reserve your place promptly.

Project Management (including project risks)
Eventbrite.co.uk
9:30am - 5pm

Are you doing 'project management' work, but you aren't a dyed-in-the-wool, fully fledged, formally ninja'd up, purist project manager?

We've paired our 'Project Management' and 'Risk Management' modules, so you learn about both aspects - managing your projects in the real world, and the important (bit often misunderstood and feared) aspect of project risks as well.
This will be a great day, from which you will leave with knowledge, skills and tools to implement straight away.

Testimonial:  "Many thanks for the great 'Project Management' training today. It was extremely useful and have immediately implemented it into my job. I look forward to more."  Lindsay Rocke, National Geographic Partners.

Aims:
a. Learn the basic ethos, tools and techniques of project management, in an informal atmosphere where we can share learning and the benefit of our experience.
b. Learn an approach to manage risks, along with tools and techniques that you can apply immediately.

Testimonial: "A truly educational experience, which allowed me to engage with the design of research projects in a more efficient and logical fashion. In academia, we are not generally taught how to manage a project although it becomes fundamental at both design and delivery stages. An interactive and stimulating course to get the basic knowledge and apply it in the real world."  Dr Dario Cazzola, Lecturer at University of Bath.

Summary:
Almost everything we do has some element of ‘project management.’ You benefit from an amalgamation of useful project management concepts and tools, learned through training and from applied experience. In essence, the content goes beyond what you may think of as ‘project management’ and should be applicable to whatever you need to do.
In addition, you will get an insight into the idea of ‘risk’ and then learn an approach, and some tools and techniques, which you'll be able to apply immediately in your role. If you've been asked to put together a project risk register, wondered what a risk classification matrix is, or if this is an area of project management you need more support with, then this course is for you.

Testimonial:  "I have just started my own business and Manage and Thrive's project management course gave me some fantastic tips to take away and implement straight away. A well delivered and valuable course." James shaw, Volley Design.

Book now and join Rob Hart, trainer at Manage and Thrive Training, for a sympathetic, enlightening and useful journey into 'project management'. Rob's LinkedIn profile is www.linkedin.com/in/robhartbusiness

INTRODUCING THE PHILOSOPHERS Georg Hegel
Introducing the Philosophers
7:30pm - 10pm

Details
Georg Hegel (German,[masked]) is notorious for the incomprehensibility of his prose and the complexity of his ideas which, nevertheless, were the first to emphasise the notion of reality as a historical process and to introduce a new understanding of achieving freedom.
The first listening is a brief introduction (7 mns) that summarises the main points of his philosophy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5JGE3lhuNo
The second listening (43 mns) is a detailed discussion of his ideas and their significance, ending with their impact on the political philosophy of Karl Marx. The questions below follow closely the discussion and are meant to help us focus on, understand and retain the complex ideas. At the meetup we will follow the questions which will serve as a springboard for our discussion by the end of which we should have some understanding of what Hegel was trying to say. I suggest you read the questions before listening. A second listening will probably be necessary. There is, of course, a lot of reading material on the net, which I personally found hard to understand, for those who have time and want to tackle it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceM8GITkKxg

1. According to Hegel, are our desires in harmony or in conflict with reason? Whichever the case, is this an inevitable historical development?
2. What's the dialectical process in the development of history according to Hegel?
3. What do you think of Hegel's claim that the rise of individual consciousness contributed to the dismantling of the harmony in Greek society?
4. Thesis, antithesis, synthesis. What's the relationship between the 3 and what follows the third? Is this development accidental or directional?
5. How do you understand Hegel's claim that change leads to more awareness of freedom?
6. Do you think his concept of 'geist' (mind/spirit), a fusion of the mental and spiritual, is a religious one?
7. In explaining his concept of alienation Hegel suggested a different view of the relationship between humans and God. What was it and how is it significant?
8. What does Hegel mean when he says the end product of the historical process and the way of understanding reality is that the self achieves self-knowledge?
9. Freedom and self-knowledge are one and the same thing. Hegel claimed that once we understand that what's bad/hostile in the world is also part of us as individuals and not external to us we achieve a state of freedom. What do you understand by this?
10. 'The real is the rational and the rational is the real'. What does this mean and what are its implications?
11. What sort of society do Hegel's concepts of historical development and our understanding of reality lead towards? Is this a desirable society?
What's the criticism against this kind of society? How valid do you think this criticism is?
12. In the context of economics what's Hegel's view of our freedom to act as we choose?
13. How do you eliminate manipulation without being authoritarian? What's Hegel's answer?
14. Form and content. Truth 'must be examined in its historical context, not as an abstract notion'. What's the form and what's the content?
15. What's the fundamental difference between the 'right Hegelians' and the 'left Hegelians'?
16. What do you make of the argument that Marx adapted all of Hegel's ideas but applied them to materialism as opposed to Hegel for whom they are happening in the spirit? How does this matter in practice?
17. What would you say Hegel's main legacy is? Where can we see his and Marx's ideas in the societies that followed them and in today's societies?
Introductory Course in Christian Meditation
Eventbrite.co.uk
7:30pm - 8:45pm

INTRODUCTION TO CHRISTIAN MEDITATION
Be still and know that I am God - Psalm 46:10
Have you ever wondered what is Christian meditation… Where does it come from… How to do it… Could it be relevant for people like me who don’t go to church?
Meditation is an ancient form of prayer. Its aim is to bring the distracted mind to silence and stillness, and rest in the presence of God. Even in our modern busy lives, this is possible. We invite you to come along and try this form of prayer which is simple and peaceful.
This introductory course provides an opportunity to experience the practice of Christian meditation in a small group, to learn about its origins, and to discover its relevance as a form of prayer for the contemporary world
The course is non-denominational and there is no charge. It begins on Tuesday 3rd April and finishes on Tuesday 8th May. Each meeting will start at 7.30pm and last about an hour. It takes place in a room at St Mary’s Church, Julian Rd Bath. BA1 2SF. The course is open to all. Please do not worry if you cannot make every session or miss earlier sessions. Do still come along.
