Knowledge and Power in Higher Education
Eventbrite.co.uk
2pm - 3:30pm

What should be taught in the university and school curriculum? Should we focus on a western enlightenment paradigm? Are we ignoring other epistemologies and views of the world? Two distinguished speakers tackle this from divergent viewpoints. The presentations will be followed by fishbowl conversations to break down traditional speaker-audience divides.
Michael Young is a renowned educational sociologist of knowledge and Professor Emeritus at UCL Institute of Education. His seminal research from the 1970s to his recent work on knowledge and social realism has influenced generations of researchers and policy makers worldwide. As well as directing the Post 16 Research Centre, he was appointed Research Advisor to the City and Guilds of London Institute and the OECD. Melz Owusu is undertaking a PhD in Social Theory at the University of Leeds and is also a grime MC/ rapper presenting academic and poetic responses to social crises on TEDx, the Huffington Post and at the University of Oxford. Contributing to transformation at the University of Leeds, she was also recently featured as a modern day Black political activist in an exhibition at the Tate Modern.
In Powerful Knowledge, the Curriculum and the Future of Education, Michael argues that there is an assault on expert knowledge by right wing populism, by utilitarianism and by identity based politics. He traces the intellectual and sociological origins of the concept ‘powerful knowledge’ and indicates both why it has been criticized and why it has the potential to give access to power not just for an elite but for all students as their democratic right. In Decolonising the Academy Melz argues that the academy is steeped in colonial Eurocentric beliefs and an all-encompassing Eurocentric epistemology. Melz explores how the academy values different forms of knowledge and questions who benefits from a Eurocentric academy, ending with how this can be challenged.
Fishbowl conversations involving the audience will be opened by Dr David Packham (University of Bath) who has been involved with Materials Science and the development of Natural Science courses for 35 years. In ‘Whose knowledge, Whose Power? David draws on Kuhn to interrogate Science as a Grand Narrative. He analyses disciplines in terms of tacit assumptions, rival viewpoints, the relationship to values and the world in which we live. He applies this understanding to a practical example of teaching.

Introductory Course in Christian Meditation
Eventbrite.co.uk
7:30pm - 8:45pm

INTRODUCTION TO CHRISTIAN MEDITATION
Be still and know that I am God - Psalm 46:10
Have you ever wondered what is Christian meditation… Where does it come from… How to do it… Could it be relevant for people like me who don’t go to church?
Meditation is an ancient form of prayer. Its aim is to bring the distracted mind to silence and stillness, and rest in the presence of God. Even in our modern busy lives, this is possible. We invite you to come along and try this form of prayer which is simple and peaceful.
This introductory course provides an opportunity to experience the practice of Christian meditation in a small group, to learn about its origins, and to discover its relevance as a form of prayer for the contemporary world
The course is non-denominational and there is no charge. It begins on Tuesday 3rd April and finishes on Tuesday 8th May. Each meeting will start at 7.30pm and last about an hour. It takes place in a room at St Mary’s Church, Julian Rd Bath. BA1 2SF. The course is open to all. Please do not worry if you cannot make every session or miss earlier sessions. Do still come along.

Pencil To Paint: Apr - Jun 2018
Eventbrite.co.uk
18th April - 13th June

“I think that painting today is pure intuition and luck.”
Francis Bacon on Matthew Smith (1909-1992)
For most of us, our relationship with art begins with a line. We take a pencil or a crayon and delineate our idea. In our enthusiasm, we may even attempt to colour it in. In the experience of many, that attempt leads only to disappointment. We know that a painting is more than just a coloured-in drawing, but how do we do it? What exactly is the difference?
This course explores the gulf between drawing and painting and then seeks to provide a bridge between the two disciplines. Beginning with simple pencil studies, we will then develop our work in both charcoal and ink, gaining confidence in our abilities, before embarking on five weeks of painting in bold colour.
This course is open to all-comers and is ideal for beginners or those who wish to take their art in a new direction.
The theme for this particular 8 week Pencil To Paint course will be abstraction and we will look at how form, gesture and emotion all play their part in successful picture-making, regardless of genre.
Topics will include:
Mark-making
Line, measurement and proportion
Notān
Colour: theory and mixing
Tables and chairs and a roll of newsprint paper are provided. Please bring a drawing board, paper or pad and your preferred drawing media. Materials required for sessions using colour will be discussed nearer the time.
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available for a small donation.
16:30 - 18:00
Wednesdays:  18, 25 April; 02, 09, 23, 30 May; 06, 13 June (8 x 1.5 hour sessions)
