The Corbyn Effect with Mark Perryman
2pm - 3:30pm

‘The Corbyn Effect’ (Lawrence & Wishart) is an essential read for those seeking to understand the present political moment, Corbyn’s leadership and a possible future for the Labour Party. How has Corbyn changed the Labour Party? Is his support inside and outside the party likely to last?  What can we expect a Corbyn government to achieve?
For this special event in Bath, the book’s author Mark Perryman will be expanding on themes and issues raised in his introductory essay ‘The Great Moving Left Show’ (free chapter can be downloaded here).
‘In the book there is a recurring argument that a leftwing government could be, and should be, as transformative as Margaret Thatcher’s. This is always a sign that British left wing intellectuals are getting excited.’ Andy Beckett, Guardian.
‘At their best these essays extend Corbyn’s “effect” into a clear-eyed contemplation of what his project should be’. Zoe Williams, Times Literary Supplement.
‘Jeremy Corbyn has re-packaged socialism into something progressive and essential. Striving for justice and fairness isn’t a sign of our weakness but the sign of our great strength. That’s The Corbyn Effect for me and this book explains why.’ Maxine Peake.
‘Understanding Corbyn, his significance and his potential, is a key task. This book will surely make an important contribution.’ Martin Jacques, former editor Marxism Today.
Mark Perryman is a member of both the Labour party and Momentum. Co-founder of the self-styled ‘sporting outfitters of intellectual distinction’ aka Philosophy Football, he has also edited numerous books on the politics of the Left, such as ‘Breaking Up Britain’, ‘Imagined Nation’, ‘The Moderniser’s  Dilemma’ and ‘The Blair Agenda’.
There is no entry charge but donations on the door towards expenses would be appreciated.

OMs are invited to row from 10.00 and a Pub lunch is then suggested. Pupils will arrive for the House Regatta in the afternoon. It will start at 14.00 and will also be accompanied by a Hog Roast or BBQ.

The Mysteries of Venus
8pm - 10pm

Venus is a striking sight. At night it shines brighter than any star and sits resplendent in our morning and evening skies.
For a long time Venus was known as Earth’s twin. It held many mysteries for scientists, concealing them under a thick and impenetrable layer of permanent cloud.
Why does Venus have less than one day in a year? Why could it be a better holiday destination than Mars? Why is it the hottest planet in our solar system?
To find out more join astronomy outreach charity Dartmoor Skies for an event that will unveil the mysteries of our nearest planetary neighbour. Then, assuming the clouds are behaving themselves, they’ll lead you into the grounds of Combe Grove where you can use a selection of telescopes and binoculars to see some of the wonders of the night-sky with your own eyes.
Make an evening of it...
Have dinner at Combe Grove before discovering Venus and receive 15% off!
Just show your ticket to the restaurant team, please note that booking is advisable.

Pencil To Paint: Apr - Jun 2018
18th April - 13th June

“I think that painting today is pure intuition and luck.”
Francis Bacon on Matthew Smith (1909-1992)
For most of us, our relationship with art begins with a line. We take a pencil or a crayon and delineate our idea. In our enthusiasm, we may even attempt to colour it in. In the experience of many, that attempt leads only to disappointment. We know that a painting is more than just a coloured-in drawing, but how do we do it? What exactly is the difference?
This course explores the gulf between drawing and painting and then seeks to provide a bridge between the two disciplines. Beginning with simple pencil studies, we will then develop our work in both charcoal and ink, gaining confidence in our abilities, before embarking on five weeks of painting in bold colour.
This course is open to all-comers and is ideal for beginners or those who wish to take their art in a new direction.
The theme for this particular 8 week Pencil To Paint course will be abstraction and we will look at how form, gesture and emotion all play their part in successful picture-making, regardless of genre.
Topics will include:
Line, measurement and proportion
Colour: theory and mixing
Tables and chairs and a roll of newsprint paper are provided. Please bring a drawing board, paper or pad and your preferred drawing media. Materials required for sessions using colour will be discussed nearer the time.
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available for a small donation.
16:30 - 18:00
Wednesdays:  18, 25 April; 02, 09, 23, 30 May; 06, 13 June (8 x 1.5 hour sessions)
