Inspiring Young Lives: An Evening with Mentoring Plus
Eventbrite.co.uk
6pm - 8pm

Winners of Charity of the Year at The Bath Life Awards 2018, Mentoring Plus, local youth charity, celebrates its 20th birthday this year. Come along to help find out why we're needed and how we continue to help turn around the lives of local vulnerable young people.
Mentoring Plus trains adult volunteers in the community to support young people in our area facing significant challenges. Young people are referred to us by school or social services because they are struggling with school or family life: over half of the young people we support are living in poverty. Mentors receive two days training and are then carefully matched with a young person that they then meet up with once a week for a year.  At the same time, we offer a varied activities programme for our young people designed to connect them with their community and increase their confidence including cookery, gardening, climbing, football, dance, yoga, drama, music and art.
Hear from the Jamie Luck, Director, of Mentoring Plus, our young people and our mentors. You'll discover that it's not only the young people who benefit. There may even be cake....
Nature Morte Across Art
Eventbrite.co.uk
6pm - 8pm

Art historian Sara Riccardi of Art Across and ‘Nature Morte’ curator Heather Griffin provide an evening’s discourse on the context of Still Life.
Riccardi and Griffin will guide a curated conversation with exhibiting artists to discuss the contemporary relevance of the genre and provide insight into how artists utilise art history to inspire creativity.  The evening will not be your average lecture but a dynamic interpretation of this format by interweaving historical narrative, contemporary art and conversation. All are welcome and encouraged to engage in the discussion.
Expect an enlightening, informative and enjoyable take on this classic subject matter.
Bath Improv.
The Bath & Bristol Everything Meetup Group
7pm - 9pm

Hello there person reading this!

We've all been there on meetup - there's a new event that looks a bit out of our comfort zone, so we read the description, go 'that's a bit scary' or 'I'm not sure that's for me' - and leave it there.

Or maybe we sign up, but then let 'any excuse' mean we don't actually go? It's raining, I'm tired, that DVD box set won't watch itself?

But why not actually TRY it?

This is a class for all levels - some of us are beginners, while others have more experience, but everyone is welcome. It consists of games and scenes all improvised by the people that come along.

Sometimes it ends up a bit mad but other times you can be surprised by the theatre that comes out of nowhere. We start off every class with warm ups and progress depending upon how we all feel, and mostly just have a laugh with a few drinks.

There is no pressure to perform first time, so if you want to just watch, see what we are about and how the classes run that's fine too.

At the moment we have rotating hosts, so you get the benefit of different teaching styles and a mixture of exercises and games.

The classes run every MONDAY 7-9pm, at The St. James Wine Vaults (upstairs), which is just behind Royal Crescent.

There are a number of people who attend through Facebook rather than Meetup, so even if the numbers signed up on Meetup look low the class will still definitely be on, and we normally have around 7-12 people attending.

There is also plentiful free street parking on nearby Julian Road and Weston Road, or in the park.

Please note there is a voluntary £2 donation towards room costs, though your first time is FREE!

Pencil To Paint: Apr - Jun 2018
Eventbrite.co.uk
18th April - 13th June

“I think that painting today is pure intuition and luck.”
Francis Bacon on Matthew Smith (1909-1992)
For most of us, our relationship with art begins with a line. We take a pencil or a crayon and delineate our idea. In our enthusiasm, we may even attempt to colour it in. In the experience of many, that attempt leads only to disappointment. We know that a painting is more than just a coloured-in drawing, but how do we do it? What exactly is the difference?
This course explores the gulf between drawing and painting and then seeks to provide a bridge between the two disciplines. Beginning with simple pencil studies, we will then develop our work in both charcoal and ink, gaining confidence in our abilities, before embarking on five weeks of painting in bold colour.
This course is open to all-comers and is ideal for beginners or those who wish to take their art in a new direction.
The theme for this particular 8 week Pencil To Paint course will be abstraction and we will look at how form, gesture and emotion all play their part in successful picture-making, regardless of genre.
Topics will include:
Mark-making
Line, measurement and proportion
Notān
Colour: theory and mixing
Tables and chairs and a roll of newsprint paper are provided. Please bring a drawing board, paper or pad and your preferred drawing media. Materials required for sessions using colour will be discussed nearer the time.
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available for a small donation.
16:30 - 18:00
Wednesdays:  18, 25 April; 02, 09, 23, 30 May; 06, 13 June (8 x 1.5 hour sessions)
