Advice from NHS Choices website on avoiding tick bites:

"Ticks are small spider-like creatures that are mainly found in woodland and heath areas. They attach to your skin, suck your blood and can cause Lyme disease in some cases. You can reduce your risk of being bitten by a tick if you:

Keep to footpaths and avoid long grass when out walking.

Wear appropriate clothing in tick-infested areas (a long sleeved shirt and trousers tucked into your socks).

Wear light-coloured fabrics that may help you spot a tick on your clothes.

Use insect repellent on exposed skin.

Inspect your skin for ticks, particularly at the end of the day, including your head, neck and skin folds (armpits, groin, and waistband).

Check your children's head and neck areas, including their scalp making sure ticks are not brought home on your clothes.

Check your pets to help ensure they don't bring ticks into your home in their fur.

It's important to remove any ticks you find as soon as possible."

Managing teams, successfully
1pm - 5pm

Price includes attendance at the training course, plus an optional 45-minute 1-2-1 training session within 1 month of the event using Skype or similar tech as appropriate.   Attendees can therefore maximise the way in which they use their learning.  Course capacity is limited to 6 attendees to allow good attention and interaction between Rob and the attendees.

Our 1/2-day training course provides new and developing managers with relevant knowledge and skills to manage themselves and their team in the real world. We also consider the 'voice of experience' and some 'tricks of the trade'.

You will be able to immediately improve your approach and performance as a manager. You will feel more informed and able to do your job. The likelihood of you making avoidable mistakes decreases.

You will feel more knowledgeable, able and confident. Your business and team will be more confident, efficient and effective.

The course covers:
a. The relativity of management and leadership
b. The benefits of process, and some process tools to implement immediately
c. Common management tools (and how to use them), including elements of project management and time management
d. Key management techniques and some relevant leadership tricks - that can be implemented immediately

2 quick promises:
1. The module is not a case of ‘death by PowerPoint’. There is interactive activity, and skills are taught using things other than a computer.
2. Although oriented towards people in commercial organisations, the content is generic in nature so it should be applicable to people from many walks of life.

Have a look at our webpage to learn more: http://www.manage-and-thrive.co.uk/managing-teams-successfully
Our 'Managing teams, successfully' training module was created by Rob Hart. He has extensive management experience in various roles, including the Army, United Nations, government, academia, large commercial practice and small business (in the United Kingdom and abroad). Badminton (Bristol)
The Bath & Bristol Everything Meetup Group
8pm - 9pm

Badminton is booked for 8:00pm on Thursday 7th June (Main Hall court 1) at Kingsdown Sports Centre, Portland Street, BS2 8HL. All are welcome, it's a 60 minute long session and we may head to a nearby pub afterwards.

Please let me know if you are going to attend by Wednesday at the latest. I would prefer that we have at least 4 players, otherwise I may cancel the booking.

Note: When arriving at reception you will need to say that you're attending a badminton session in my name (Matthew Barker). Also, they may require that you to sign up for a (free) Everyone Active membership.

See you there,
Matt ([masked])

Q: How does it work?
A: It's pretty informal, but I would like to know in advance if you are going to attend. (If, by the day before the booking, fewer than 4 people say they are going, I may cancel the booking.) On the day, just turn up in the sports hall with your kit at the booked time and we'll play as many games as we can in the time, rotating through the available players after each one. Usually we play doubles up to 11 points, but this can vary depending on the number of players. Afterwards, we often go to a nearby pub afterwards for a drink and a chat.

Q: How often do you play?
A: Usually every two weeks.

Q: How much does it cost?
A: Between £1 and £5 per session, depending on how many people turn up, but usually between £1.50 and £2.50.

Q: What is the standard of play?
A: This is hard to specify, but it's mixed and generally not high, so a novice shouldn't find it too challenging.

Q: How many courts are booked?
A: Only one court is booked, but if there are more than 4 people we play to 11 points (rather than the usual 21) to allow waiting players to get a game more often.

Q: Who can attend?
A: It is open to all (and usually has a combination of men and women). Come along and see if it suits you.

Q: I'm new to the group, how can I find you?
A: Sometimes the expected court number will be specified in advance, otherwise if you don't fancy asking around, you can let me know you'll be coming and I can arrange to meet you.

Q: What parking facilities are there?
A: The sports centre has its own car parks and there is usually on-street parking nearby. There are also bicycle stands outside the entrance.

Q: Can I just turn up for the pub afterwards?
A: Of course, though we don't always go and the choice of pub can vary so it's best to let me know in advance.

Q: Do I need my own racquet?
A: Preferably, though you can hire one from the sports centre (currently for £2 with £5 deposit). For newcomers, I can sometimes bring a spare on request.

Q: What type of shuttles are used?
A: Feather shuttles are provided and included in the session cost.

Q: What rules do you play with?
A: We usually play using 'rally point scoring', i.e. points are scored regardless of who serves, and when the serving side loses a rally, the serve changes immediately to the opponents. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badminton#Scoring_system_and_service.
Learn to dance in one night for FREE! *NOTE NEW VENUE!*
The Bath & Bristol Everything Meetup Group
8pm - 11pm

Learn to dance in one night for FREE!

Ceroc is partner dancing and has been described as a cross between jive, ballroom, tango and salsa. I find it much easier to learn than Salsa though. As I often go I thought it would be a fun thing to put on for others to try too. Maybe you've thought about trying it, but have been unsure when would be a good time. Well, this is a good time!

If you say you are with the Meetup group to the front desk then they will be able to help you (and also say if there are others that have arrived first).

The actual dancing starts at 8.05pm. After a brief warm-up there will be a beginner's class for 40 minutes. After that there is free dancing, right up to eleven o'clock if you want. Although there will be a chance to chat at various points of the evening, (especially at the beginning) this is more a dancing evening than a social event.

The full address is: St Phillip & James Church, 35 Frome Road, Bath, BA2 2QF

Free street parking is available in side streets near the venue.

Sorry regular dancers, but please note that the free entry is only offered if it is your first time dancing at Ceroc. You are more than welcome to pay and still attend though.

Pencil To Paint: Apr - Jun 2018
18th April - 13th June

“I think that painting today is pure intuition and luck.”
Francis Bacon on Matthew Smith (1909-1992)
For most of us, our relationship with art begins with a line. We take a pencil or a crayon and delineate our idea. In our enthusiasm, we may even attempt to colour it in. In the experience of many, that attempt leads only to disappointment. We know that a painting is more than just a coloured-in drawing, but how do we do it? What exactly is the difference?
This course explores the gulf between drawing and painting and then seeks to provide a bridge between the two disciplines. Beginning with simple pencil studies, we will then develop our work in both charcoal and ink, gaining confidence in our abilities, before embarking on five weeks of painting in bold colour.
This course is open to all-comers and is ideal for beginners or those who wish to take their art in a new direction.
The theme for this particular 8 week Pencil To Paint course will be abstraction and we will look at how form, gesture and emotion all play their part in successful picture-making, regardless of genre.
Topics will include:
Line, measurement and proportion
Colour: theory and mixing
Tables and chairs and a roll of newsprint paper are provided. Please bring a drawing board, paper or pad and your preferred drawing media. Materials required for sessions using colour will be discussed nearer the time.
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available for a small donation.
16:30 - 18:00
Wednesdays:  18, 25 April; 02, 09, 23, 30 May; 06, 13 June (8 x 1.5 hour sessions)
