Towards 21st Century Drainage – A Structural Perspective
Eventbrite.co.uk
7:45am - 10:30am

The Future Economy Network is proud to be co-hosting this event with our subcribers to The Network, Integral Engineering Design.

Structural engineers from Integral Engineering Design talk about how their role is changing with the demands of surface water management on today’s projects.

Current and future climate change is increasing rainfall events in frequency and intensity however it is not sustainable to continually upgrade our public infrastructure to cope with these. The volumes of water involved mean that surface water attenuation is driving the drainage and even the structural design as early as concept stage.
A variety of solutions will be presented and illustrated by recent project experience.
After the presentations there will be time for networking over coffee & breakfast!

Get to know our speaker!
Claire Thomas, MA(Oxf) CEng MIStructE
Claire is an Associate at Integral and has over 20 years’ experience of designing a wide variety of building structures. She has always enjoyed environmentally responsible design and the multi-disciplinary nature of her work, so taking on the challenge of surface water drainage design and its effect on the architecture and landscape has been a natural step.

Aim: Learn basic ethos, tools and techniques of project management, in an informal atmosphere where we can share learning and the benefit of our experience.

Summary: Pretty much everything we are asked to do has some element of ‘project management’, whether we know it or not. The concepts and tools can be applied to many managerial tasks. This course is an amalgamation of useful project management concepts and tools, learned through training and from applied experience. In essence, the content goes beyond what you may think of as ‘project management’ and should be applicable to whatever you need to do.

Content:

And for context - most things we are likely to do are a 'project' in some sense.  This course is equally appropriate for those seeking 'general management' training, not just the constraints of 'project management'.

Some testimonials:
"A truly educational experience, which allowed me to engage with the design of research projects in a more efficient and logical fashion. In academia, we are not generally taught how to manage a project although it becomes fundamental at both design and delivery stages. An interactive and stimulating course to get the basic knowledge and apply it in the real world."
"Rob was both engaging and knowledgable in his field."

FAQs
What time should I arrive? Please feel free to arrive from 12:45pm, ready for a (hopefully) prompt start at 1pm.

Will food be provided?
Food will not be provided, other than biscuits to go with tea/coffee.
What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?
Find The GuildThe Guild is situated right in the centre of Bath, and is located within the historic Guildhall building. The building itself has three entrances, ours is the last one on the left as you look at the front of the Guildhall, and is directly opposite TK Maxx.If you use a satnav then please use: BA1 5AWOtherwise you may be routed to elsewhere in Bath if instead you use BA1 5EB
Arrival by CarBath is not a car friendly city. A series of bus gates means that cars cannot drive directly through the centre of the city between the hours of 10am and 7pm (including weekends). While there is on street parking around the city, it is expensive and in short supply. It will most likely be easier for you to either use one of the park and rides into town, or to use one of the long stay car parks. If you are coming from London via car, we recommend using the Lansdown park and ride. Otherwise, we recommend Charlotte Street car park. Once you have parked at the Charlotte Street car park, head down to Charlotte Street and head towards Queen Square. Diagonally across Queen Square, find Wood Street (aim towards the Paxton and Whitfield cheese shop). Continue in that same general direction along Quiet Street (the Kitchen shop will be on your left). Go straight over Milsom Street (a major shopping street) and along Green Street (passing the Tasting Rooms wine and whisky shop). Once there, turn right and head that way (the Waitrose building will be on your left). When you get to TK Maxx and Cafe Nero, which should be on your right, head over the road to the Guild Hall building. The entrance to the Guild is to the left of the entrance to the Guildhall market, as you look at it. The door usually has a little sandwich board for the Guild outside it.
Public TransportBath is well served by train and coach links.Bath railway station is an 8 minute walk away.Bath bus station is situated right next to the railway station. Use satnav (see above). Alternatively: as you exit the front entrance of the railway station, you find a road junction with The Royal Bath Hotel and Brasserie Brunel opposite. Head straight up the road in front of you (which is the A3039, with Debenhams' side-entrance and some bus stops on your left). Head towards the big building which houses Garfunkels/Browns/Empire Hotel. When you get to this big building, veer left and follow the wall of this building (so the wall will of the building will be on the right), heading towards All Bar One and Starbucks. Follow the road around to the right. You will then find the entrance to the Guildhall Market, with a Cafe Nero on the opposite side of the road. A little bit further along beyond the Market entrance is the Guild entrance, which usually has a little sandwich board outside for the Guild it. If you get as far as TX Maxx, you’ve probably gone a little bit too far if you came from the station. How can I contact the organiser with any questions? Please email rob@manage-and-thrive.co.ukDo I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? No.Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable? No. Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends? In principle that is ok, but please email rob@manage-and-thrive.co.uk to advise of the change.

What is the 'Will of the People'? England and Brexit.
Eventbrite.co.uk
5:15pm - 7pm

The 'Will of the People' has been invoked as justifying Brexit and what the Daily Mail calls “a deep-seated human yearning to recover our national identity and independence”. But as a concept it explodes the sovereignty of parliament, which is the bedrock of British nationalism. Also, Scotland and Northern Ireland voted differently from England (and Wales would too now, if there is another vote). So who are 'the people'? Do they have only one 'will'? Is it unchangeable? Is it an expression of democracy or an anti-democratic device? These questions go to the heart of Brexit.

Speaker profile
Anthony Barnett is the founder of openDemocracy, author of The Lure of Greatness: England's Brexit and America's Trump, and a supporter of a People's Vote.

Bath NOVEMBER Veggie/Vegan Social :)
Bristol & West Vegetarians & Vegans
6:30pm - 11pm

Hi everyone,

This is a monthly evening get together in Bath for members of the group who live in the Bath area or just fancy a night out here! :)

These get-togethers will be on a week night and be an informal evening where members can turn up at any time and stay as long as you like from 6.30 PM to 11.00PM. Whilst they will not be formal sit down meal occasions, I will choose venues where vegan/veggie food can be purchased if you wish to grab something to eat. The idea is to get together for a drink and a chat and hopefully meet some like- minded people and new friends!

Please remember to update your RSVP to "no" if you find that you can no longer attend after signing up.

NOVEMBER MEETUP -

COMPTOIR, Bath

This month we are going to a different venue - Comptoir, a lebanese cafe-bar in the heart of Southgate. With it's bright and colourful decor and central location close to bus and train stations, Comptoir also has a selection of interesting vegan dishes to try if you fancy something to eat - or just come along for a drink and a chat!

Check it out here!

Hope to see you there :)
Bath Makers Meetup (at The Guild)
Bath Makers Meetup (at The Guild)
6:30pm - 9pm

If you’re an inventor, an artist, a creator, a designer, a maker, then come along and come hang out and make awesome things with like minded people in a sociable and engaging environment! All skill levels welcome, the only prerequisite is an enquiring mind and a love for making things.

The 3D print area:

We’ll have a couple of 3D printers running. If you are a 3D modeller and have something you desperately want printing please let us know in advance as there’s a chance we could print your design on the night (depending on how big the part is). If no-one has anything in particular they want printing we'll more than likely print some quadcopter parts or a nic-nac for someone top take home with them.

We'll also have a 3D print pen which everyone is welcome to have a play on.

The laser cutter area:

We’ll have a glowforge laser cutter running in one of the rooms. We’ll be cutting/engraving some bits and bobs to demo what the cutter can do. We also thought it’d be cool if people go home with a little trinket so we’ll be offering everyone the chance (time dependant) to make their own customised keyring should they want to.

The robot area:

We’ll bring along an ozobot. If you haven’t heard of them before they are these awesome little line following robots which can be programmed by changing the colours of the line they travel over. It’s a great little introduction to programming for kids and to be honest it’s also quite fun as an adult :)

The show and tell area:

If you have something recently please consider bringing it along and putting it in the show and tell area, you never know who you might inspire!

We'll also bring along an Arduino starter kit so if someone wants to have a play and create a simple project they’d be able to do so.

I'll also bring down some micro quadcopters and some FPV goggles which you can wear whilst I take you on a tour of the space.

If you have an ongoing project/build then bring it down to work on, that's what this is all about! The only limiting factor is that we currently run the meetup in an office-type environment so if you need to bring down tool just bear in mind excessive noise/mess. If you’re in doubt just check with me prior.
Pensions and Taxation Seminar / Bath
Eventbrite.co.uk
7pm - 8:30pm

Pensions are a complex issue for doctors, not helped by regular changes to the rules. But don't let these challenges eclipse one critical truth - the NHS Pension Scheme is a great way to save for your retirement.
Our Pensions and Taxation seminar is aimed at doctors aged 40 years and over.
Over 90 minutes one of our experts will explain how the pension rules works for doctors in the NHS Pension Scheme; and what you really need to know to make sure that that your finances are properly prepared for retirement, so that you can retire well and on your own terms.
We will help you to better understand:

The 3 NHS pension schemes and how they work together
Changes to the annual allowance, including tapering, and if you are affected
How to calculate your ‘adjusted income’ and how this could catch you unawares
The lifetime allowance, how it may affect you and how to minimise any impact
How to make the most of a private pension to benefit your spouse or partner
How to sensibly plan to protect your financial future and that of the next generation

The seminar is free to attend for all doctors and you are welcome to bring a guest.

Pencil To Paint: Sep - Dec 2018
Eventbrite.co.uk
26th September - 5th December

“I think that painting today is pure intuition and luck.”
Francis Bacon on Matthew Smith (1909-1992)
For most of us, our relationship with art begins with a line. We take a pencil or a crayon and delineate our idea. In our enthusiasm, we may even attempt to colour it in. In the experience of many, that attempt leads only to disappointment. We know that a painting is more than just a coloured-in drawing, but how do we do it? What exactly is the difference?
This course explores the gulf between drawing and painting and then seeks to provide a bridge between the two disciplines. Beginning with simple pencil studies, we will then develop our work in both charcoal and ink, gaining confidence in our abilities, before embarking on five weeks of painting in bold colour.
This course is open to all-comers and is ideal for beginners or those who wish to take their art in a new direction.
The theme for this particular 10 week Pencil To Paint course will be 'still life' and we will look at how artists from Caravaggio to Cezanne used tonality, form and colour to compose their paintings.
Topics will include:
Mark-making
Line, measurement and proportion
Notān
Colour: theory and mixing
Tables and chairs and a roll of newsprint paper are provided. Please bring a drawing board, paper or pad and your preferred drawing media. Materials required for sessions using colour will be discussed nearer the time.
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available for a small donation.

Wednesdays:  26 September; 03, 10, 17, 24 ,October; 07, 14, 21, 28 November; 05 December  - 10 x 1.5 hour sessions)
